Sheung Yue River is located in the northern part of New Territories. The river originates from Tai To Yan, it joins with Shek Sheung River in Ho Sheung Heung to form Ng Tung River which then flows northward. With the opening of the Frontier Closed Area, the area around Sheung Yue River has gradually become a tourist spot for cyclists, and the nearby network of cycling and pedestrian paths is being improved. It is believed that the relevant facilities will make it easier for wheelchair users to visit the area in near future.

Start from Exit C on the ground floor of Sheung Shui MTR Station, turn right and go along Choi Yuen Road, then descend the tunnel (the ramp is about 4°, i.e. 1:14) to cross Po Shek Wu Road and continue the walk along Shek Sheung River. Make a turn along the road after passing Sheung Shui Ambulance Depot, you will then see a large water pipeline pumping Dongjiang water. Follow Ng Tung River and ascend slightly (the ramp is about 5°, i.e. 1:11) and turn left to cross the bridge. Go straight at the crossroad behind the bridge, then turn right towards the kiosk on Fai King Road (Ho Sheung Heung Road is on the left).
After a short break, go back to the previous intersection and turn right into a driveway (beware of oncoming traffic). Turn right at the following fork (the interchange of Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung River) and connect to the sidewalk on the side of the cycling track to Ho Sheung Heung Public Toilet (III).
Cross the bridge behind the public toilet, and follow the concrete path to explore the farm in the periphery of Long Valley. Then, turn back along the road, walk pass the public toilet to the fork where Sheung Yue River and Shek Sheung River meet. Samantha, an electric wheelchair user: I went with a group of wheelchair user friends to enjoy the scenery along Sheung Yue River, when we were passing by the water pipeline and MTR railway, I realized the gate of the northernmost closed area was very close to Lo Wu Control Point. On the east bank of Sheung Yue River, I also noticed Sheung Shui Slaughterhouse was built behind the trees on the road!
Sheung Yue River brought me peaceful rural scenery, the river was calm and the scenery was like a painting. Moreover, it is one of the important water sources in New Territories, the water was clear which is very relaxing.
Afterwards, we went to Ho Sheung Heung before noon to taste the all-you-can-eat bean curd and soy milk at only $12, the hot bean curd and soy milk were very fresh. This cool summer hike gave me a wonderful time.
Angel, an electric wheelchair user: The hiking route of Sheung Yue River in Ho Sheung Heung - starting from Sheung Shui MTR Station, the road was very flat and suitable for electric wheelchair users. There were two supply points (where you can buy drinks and snacks), and there was a very clean barrier-free toilet in the middle of our journey, which eases wheelchair users’ concern about the availability of toilet. The scenery along the road was pleasant, it was a pleasure to feel the breeze in the shade of trees and listen to the birds chirping, thank you Teddy and the volunteers for guiding us.
This route starts and ends at MTR station, so it is convenient for wheelchair users. Most part of the trail was very wide and flat, which is very suitable for 3-5 wheelchair users travelling together. This area has not been developed extensively, so the country vibe can be retained. In Winter and early Spring, migratory birds can be found in the rivers or in the paddy fields of Long Valley.
This route has been explored twice. The original plan of the return journey was to go southward along Sheung Yue River and finish at Kwu Tung Road, but the pedestrian path near the endpoint was uneven, and the only available bus no. 76K (runs between Long Valley and Sheung Shui) is infrequent. Therefore, the return journey is diverted to Shek Sheung River and finishes at Sheung Shui MTR station, it is more convenient for multiple wheelchair users to travel together.
Tak Yuet Lau Police Post located at the border of Lo Wu is a popular attraction for cyclists, however, part of the west side of Ng Tung River is blocked by stairs. Wheelchair users can go north along the driveway of Fai King Road and turn right, but they will have to descend a steep slope of about 11° (1:5) and the route will be longer. Friends who plan to go should pay attention to the vehicles passing by, the slope of the road and the wheelchair battery.
Long Valley has always been a hot spot for bird watching. The species appear around the farms are different from those along the river banks. Friends who are interested in bird watching could pay a visit.
It was 30°C on the day of the pilot run, but 4 wheelchair users still participated.
There was a moment when we were under the blue sky, white clouds, and shades of the riverside, the participants lowered the back of their seats and just lay there, they closed their eyes, listened to the birdsong and felt the cool breeze ...
A moment like that ...
You may not be moved by the great mountains and rivers, but you can grasp the comfort of this moment.
